CUT IT SHORT

From my faint knowledge of business studies, i remember something called shorthand. It is a form of writing that has some special notations and signs that makes writing so short once properly mastered. I guess it was invented for stenographers that have to scribble three thousand words in three minutes! Jeez, that was a little exaggerated, but it was a make-shift writing style that is to be converted later to conventional longhand. It is very formal and recognised.
There is however another form of shorthand that has gained so much ground in a very short while. It has got appeal, very stylish, witty and can be found in the informal setting of young people around the world. It's got so much acclaim that even the older ones donot want to be left behind. I might have to switch to it once in a while during the course of this write up. I suspect my hands  might get weary from typing long words.
I stand to be corrected, but i think i started with the advent of internet and mobile technology. The 'cyber age' as we might call it came with lots of things to indulge young people, from chat sites to social network sites to text messaging and other stuffs. On all these various informal platforms, this style proves to be a very useful tool of communication. The words just kept getting shorter, with variants springing up daily. Text messages shows just how creative people could get with words in a bid to minimize thoughts to the 160characters that makes one page one phones. Believe me it is a very lovely development and the whole world has adopted it, but there might be fire on the mountain..
I've never had any problem with this style because i'm a pro myself, but a scenario drew my attention to the latent danger in this practice. Just the other day, my 4yr old niece asked me to spell the word 'SCHOOL'. Not much of a problem for an undergraduate but i fumbled. I grabbed her pencil and scribbled 'schl', then 'skuul', and 'skuul' before i finally got it correctly. I had to stylishly excuse myself to avoid further embarassment. Then i had to pause and think to locate where that came from. I soon found out that the only time i got to use such short forms was while in those informal settings. I then tried to imagine how many others like me had experience such.
This issue might sound very trivial but can have dire consequences if care is not taken. This style is really cool but we might be overkilling it. Imagine someone makes that kind of mistake in an examination...a dear price would be paid for such. It might be slowly eating into our spelling abilities. It took us several dozens of notebooks to learn spelling and it would be a sad thing for all of that to go down the drain.
On a lighter note, we don't know the 'efiwes' that truly know how to spell and the 'olodos' that don't know how to. This is a perfect cover for ignorance! U cn trust me, i knw to spel jst anytin, only dat i luv it as mch as u do. I'm jst scared dat its getin on d high side.
Let's cut it short b4 it intoxicates lik sepe in d system..lol! I'l try al i cn 2 stop my obvious adictn.
